WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

Community Financial Counselling Services, Inc. (CFCS) was established in 1974 as a non-profit corporation and is registered with Canada Revenue Agency as a charitable organization. Responsibility for the operation of CFCS rests with a voluntary Board of Directors drawn from the community who serve without remuneration. 

 

CFCS is a member agency of the United Way of Winnipeg.  CFCS also receives operating funding from The Department of Finance, Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Lotteries. This funding model allows us to offer our services free or at a minimal cost relative to similar services.

 

Community Financial Counselling Services sees its role relative to other debt management services to also be able address the needs of more vulnerable and high risk populations such as youth, seniors, low income, persons living with a disability and persons with problem gambling behaviour.  We are able to take the time to provide comprehensive financial counselling that takes into consideration the individual’s or family’s other concerns and to work with other helping agencies to deal with those concerns.  Not only do we help people to create a plan to meet their financial responsibilities that is tailored to their resources and circumstances, but we work with people on an ongoing basis to help them gain the decision-making skills and self-management abilities that will continue to support them long after our formal relationship with them has ended.CFCS, through its unique counselling approach, helps people to make changes that create skills and capacities. 

 

In addition to this role as a financial counselling service, CFCS also partners with other organizations such as the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, The Workers Compensation Board, and others in order to provide more integrated service delivery.  We also provide community education and workshops for other agencies  that increase knowledge and awareness of  financial counselling, debt management, gambling, employment and income assistance issues..
